Moonee : "You know why this is my favorite tree?"
Jancey : "Why?"
Moonee : 'Because it's tipped over but it's still growing."
This conversation actually shows Moonee's innate childish optimism. She sees that it is possible for a life to be upended, but for it to continue, and grow, even if it is a different direction or way than before. She subconsciously brings this optimism to her own life and believes that even if things are different she can still make her life into something, and move forward.
You just let her get away? And I'm the one who's unfit? F*ck you!
Hailey is being investigated for being an unfit parent. Because of this, Moonee is being taken from her and is going to foster care, the problem being that nobody has consulted Moonee in this process and she wants to stay with her mom, in the motel that she knows, and she doesn't want to go to a foster home. She and Jancey run towards Magic Kingdom, and the authorities lose her. Hailey is furious because in all her years as Moonee's mother she has never lost her, and Moonee has never run away. There is a huge irony in this for her; the authorities believe she is an unfit mother but they have only been in charge of Moonee for five minutes and she has already given them the slip.
