Leo Chao
Leo Chao is Winnie’s husband and a father to Dagou, James and Ming. Leo relocated from China to live with his family in the United States of America. Leo is a hardworking man who does everything he can to ensure his family excels. Leo and his wife successfully started a Fine Chao Chinese restaurant in Haven, Wisconsin.
Despite Leo's success in business, he is not on good terms with his wife and the eldest son. Leo's wife accuses him of infidelity, and she goes to live in a different apartment. Dagou thinks that his father wants to deny him his inheritance, and he secretly kills him. Leo is found dead in the restaurant’s kitchen freezer.
Dagou
Dagou is Leo Chao’s eldest son. Despite being an intelligent man who went to the best college in the USA, Dagou is lazy. Instead, Dagou wants to inherit his father's restaurant. Leo discovers that Dagou is lazy because he looks forward to inheriting the family's restaurant. Leo tricks Dagou that he will sell the restaurant to a potential investor. Dagou feels betrayed and plots to kill his father during a night party. When Leo enters the restaurant's cold room, Dagou locks him up, intending to kill him. In the morning, Leo is found dead in the freezer.
Winnie Chao
Winnie is Leo's wife and mother to James, Dagou and Ming. Winnie is a loyal wife who works closely with her husband to ensure they give their children the best. In addition, Winnie is a great cook, and she specializes in the Chinese menu. However, Winnie is not on good terms with Leo because she suspects him of cheating. Winnie decides to leave her matrimonial home to live in a separate apartment.
James
James is the last born in the Chao family and is a university student. James is a kind young man ready to help those in need. When James meets a helpless Chinese man in the train station, he helps him to interpret directions. Besides being kind, James is hardworking and focused, unlike his eldest brother. James plans to become a prominent lawyer.
Ming
Ming is the sibling of Dagou and James. Ming is the most successful sibling in Chao’s family. After finishing his university studies, Ming relocated to New York to start a business, and he excelled in everything he did. Ming is not interested in inheriting anything from his family.
