The Elite Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Caste system (Motif)

Illéa is a dystopian nation with a system of governance that is executed through a caste system. Every aspect of the citizens’ lives is dependent on this system that divides them into eight different factions. The Ones are the royalties with the power over all other caste numbers with Eights being the lowest in the social hierarchy. The rebellion taking place is a protest against the monarchy and the oppressive caste system. Furthermore, the competition highlights the social barriers that are placed on the people per their caste number.

Love (Motif)

Romance is the major element in the narrative, as America has to grapple with her feelings for Maxon and Aspen. Prince Maxon is at the center of the competition with the remaining six women competing for his affection. However, his love is reserved for only one woman which he later confesses is America. She doubts Maxon’s love and attempts to prove if it is true or nonexistent. Through this, a love triangle develops since she oscillates back and forth about who she truly loves. Furthermore, most characters find their fate determined because of the person they love or loved.

Jealousy (Motif)

America is invested in the competition in this installment after developing feelings for the prince. Among the elites, the race is now competitive and some of the girls have also developed romantic feelings for Maxon. Therefore his attention is not enough to go around at the same time which causes conflict and jealousy. America is envious of the other girls as she is unyielding in attaining Maxon’s affection for herself.

Punishment (Motif)

In this oppressive regime, punishment is administered to those who break the strict rules of the land. Corporal punishment is inflicted upon the individuals in the lower caste number such as Marlee following her affair with the guard. However, the Ones are also not spared for instance Maxon is punished by his father after America’s stunt at the debate.

The competition (Symbol)

The selection symbolizes the social dynamic that dictates the state of affairs in this dystopian nation. The game highlights the spectacle around the idea and preference of many to marry up. It offers the opportunity for the lower caste members to climb up the social hierarchy and enjoy the perks. Therefore illustrates the collective consciousness that has been fostered by the repressive nature of the monarchy.
