Structure:
The beatniks and hippies were counter- or subcultures in midcentury America: the Beat movement began in the 1950s and the hippie movement in the 1960s. Define the term "counterculture" clearly. What does it mean? When did it come into existence? What else might it apply to?
Ask students to research or brainstorm countercultures that have come into existence...
