The Dressmaker (2015 Film) Quotes and Analysis

"I'm back, you bastards."

Tilly

This is no quiet, secret return to town. Tilly wants everyone to know that she is back, and back with a vengeance, quite literally. This is the first line of the film, uttered as Tilly emerges from the train in Dungatar and takes a drag of a cigarette. It foreshadows her infamy in the town and the fact that she has a past there.

Gertrude: A dress can't change anything.

Tilly: You have a lot to learn.

Gertrude and Tilly

Tilly recognizes that Gertrude wants to change how she is perceived in the town, and offers to make her a dress. Her ulterior motive is to get some information out of Gertrude, though Gertrude does not realize this. In this exchange, Gertrude expresses her skepticism that a dress will make her more desirable, and Tilly insists that her dresses have transformative power.

"You could be married in this suit... snapped up by some eligible spinster...or hag..."

Molly

Molly says this to Teddy when Tilly is measuring him for his suit for Gertrude's wedding. Molly teases him and implies that he ought to marry Tilly (calling her a "spinster") or herself (a "hag").

"I reckon you came home for one of two things, revenge or... me..."

Teddy

Teddy says this to Tilly as a way of acknowledging that she has returned to Dungatar to get revenge, but also suggesting that she has perhaps returned because she wants to be with him.

"You never met the rubbish..."

Tilly

This is Tilly's final line in the film. The train ticket collector comments on the fact that Dungatar is on fire, likely from a rubbish fire. After he suggests that the person burning the rubbish "overdid" it, Tilly says this line, suggesting that her act of arson is completely justified.

"A murderer...and a lesbian..."

Molly

This is another of Molly's wisecracks. Skeptical of Tilly and her reputation, she slyly comments on the fact that Tilly has to have her female clients take off their clothes for measurements, suggesting that Tilly is a lesbian. Neither of these accusations is true, but it gives us a sense of Molly's irreverence.

"You’ll be familiar with my work soon enough. Evan Pettyman invited me here. Did you think they wouldn’t fight back?"

Una Pleasance

Una Pleasance says this to Tilly, as a way of revealing that she has been hired by Evan Pettyman as competition for Tilly. This shows us that the powerful people in town will stop at nothing to drive Tilly away.

"You moved, Tilly! You moved!"

Barney

Barney, Teddy's mentally disabled brother, says this over and over again in the film, as a kind of tic. It seems like he is just referring to the fact that Tilly had to move away when she was young, but we eventually learn that he's referring to the fact that Tilly moved away from the wall when Stewart Pettyman charged towards her, causing him to break his neck.

Teddy: G’day. Yer get-up’s distracting the players.
Tilly: Well, I do have an unusual talent for bias cutting.

Teddy and Tilly

Upon arriving in Dungatar, Tilly goes to some football matches wearing some couture gowns, which distract the footballers. Teddy, in his first interaction with Tilly, tries to discourage her from doing so, but she is not so easily dissuaded.

"It was you lot killed Teddy. He died trying to prove his love for her was stronger than your hate."

Molly

Molly goes to the general store, after Teddy's death, and says this to the people assembled. She refers to the fact that Teddy died doing a grand gesture for Tilly as a way of showing her she was loved. Molly blames Tilly's low self-esteem and Teddy's death on the town.
