Lindsey Owyang
Lindsey was born and raised in California. She lives in San Francisco with her grandmother who is Chinese. Lindsey's story is primarily the story of her navigating a kind of dual identity. At home, she is made to feel fully Chinese, but in the context of her social life and career, she feels American. The dualism is teased by her job; she works at a vegan magazine, but secretly she knows she is not vegan. Her story is one of resolving seemingly incompatible aspects of her personality.
Michael Cartier
Michael is a travel editor and writer for Vegan Warrior, their magazine. He is white, but that doesn't matter to Lindsey. It matters a lot to her grandmother, though, so when she starts to admit feelings about Michael to herself, it brings the issue of her grandmother's approval to another level. She starts hanging out with Michael outside of work, and even after only a few dates, she cannot help but admit that she is falling for him—falling "in like," that is.
Grandmother
Lindsey's grandmother lives with her at their house in San Francisco. Whereas Lindsey is American-born, her grandmother is deeply attached to her home country, China. She preserves Chinese culture as much as she can in their apartment, and when a chance arises for Lindsey to meet someone in her Chinese community, she is typically pushy about that. The grandmother invites Lindsey to go with her to China, and that journey helps to reframe Lindsey's sense of identity.
