Ka

Ka is the main character from the first story "The Book of Ka". She is Haitian whose parents escaped Haiti to live in New York. She is a sculptor by profession and travels to Florida with her father to sell a sculpture she made of him.

Married couple from "Seven"

The main characters that can be characterized together from the story "Closer" are a married Haitian couple who find the way to each other after seven years of separation, but realize that the intimacy never had time to evolve as they got separated right after marrying.

Nadine

Nadine is the main character of "Water Child". She is a nurse that is going through an emotional and mental struggle after abortion.

Dany

Dany is the main character of "Night Talkers". He decides to visit his aunt in Haiti to reveal to her that he discovered the "Dew Breaker", the man who killed his parents.

Beatrice Saint Fort

Beatrice is the famous seamstress from the story "The Bridal Seamstress". She is about to retire, but she is still haunted by her experience with the "dew breaker" that she believes that he is following her every time she moves.

Michel

Michel is the main character of "Monkey Tails". He is another person sharing the apartment with other characters from previous stories. He recalls his childhood during the time when Haitian dictator stepped out of his position, and the fear and chaos that ensued controlled by the militia. Michel remembers his first friend, a boy called Romain.

The Dew Breaker

The story of the unnamed character, the "Dew Breaker" who connects all the other stories is revealed in the final story. He is Ka's father, and he was a member of militia, who captured and tortured everyone who spoke against the Haitian government.

Anne

Anne is Ka's mother who met her father after he escaped the prison premises to leave his life as a dew breaker behind. She was his main motivation and reason the escape Haiti and start a new life.
