Calleach McFay
Callie is the protagonist of the novel. She is a writer and her field of study is mythological creatures which was inspired by her often appearing dreams of a shadowy man. Even though reluctant, she finally accepts the teaching position at Fairwick college which will prove to have rather adventurous consequences, to say the least.
Liam Doyle (incubus)
The shadowy man visiting Callie's dreams takes on shape, both physically and emotionally, as the plot progresses. Trying to exorcise this incubus haunting her Callie, subconsciously not wanting to go through with it, she would rather that the demon lover stays with her, enables him to take physical form. A few weeks later, there is a new poet teacher at town called Liam Doyle to whom Callie feels strange attraction. At the end of the novel we discover that Liam is Callie's incubus.
Liz Book
Liz Book is the dean of Fairwick college, but secretly she is something more. She is an old witch who made it her mission to work with and help magical creatures, especially fairies, despite it clashing against how most witches behave and work.
Mara Marinca
Mara Marinca is an exchange student from Bosnia with a disturbing story of her war experience. That is her cover at least. In reality, Mara is a bird creature from the Faerie which got set free by Callie at the beginning. Her origin is East Europe, so some part of her story was somewhat close to the truth.
Nicky Ballard
Nicky is another one of Callie's students. Poor girl has an old witch curse attached to her family name which brings all the Ballard women drown their misery in alcohol for the rest of their lives. Fortunately, Callie is able to lift the curse off her name at the end.
Sohelia
Sohelia is another magical creature brought to life. She is a descendant of the Mesopotamian wind spirit; she is an incubus who got gifted a physical form thanks to being loved, just like Callie's incubus Liam.
