    How do Greta’s feelings toward Lili evolve as the novel progresses?

    Greta is jealous when Lili first appears. She sees Lili as a threat to she and Einar’s relationship. She does not want her husband to go out as Lili and have relationships with men. As Lili becomes more involved in their lives, Greta sees her as a sister and only wants her to be happy. Einar is happy when he is Lili. Greta can see the change in him and wants him to do what he needs to have a happy and fulfilled life. She knows she will lose him but is willing to for his happiness.

    Why does Einar give up his painting when he and Greta move to Paris?

    Lili emerges more when Einar and Greta move to Paris. She is more adventurous and likes to roam the city. Painting is a symbol of his old life and Einar wants to escape from it. He sees his past life as oppressive and in Paris emerges into the person, he wants to be not who he is expected to be.

    Why does Lili name herself after the Elbe River?

    Water is often used in creation myths. It symbolizes water as the beginning of life. By choosing this name, Lili begins on her journey of a new life that she hopes will nourish her and those around her. Water can also symbolize fertility and Lili wants to be a mother.
