Why does Prince Camlach fear Merlin?
Prince Camlach fears Merlin’s father. No one knows his identity except Lady Niniane. She refuses to tell anyone his name to protect her son. Camlach fears that the man will come for Merlin and threaten Camlach’s claim to his father’s kingdom. He attempts to kill Merlin to keep this from happening. Merlin does not understand why his father’s identity is so important.

Why does Ambrosius take Merlin into his care in the camp?
Ambrosius takes Merlin under his care because he is his son. He wants to protect him and give him the respect he should have had from his grandfather and uncle. Uther resents the attention that Ambrosius gives Merlin and the fact that he trusts the boy’s opinion and visions. Uther is surprised to learn that Merlin is Ambrosius’ son.

What position does Merlin hold in Ambrosius’ court? How does he help his father?
Merlin is his father’s closest advisor. He uses his visions to help his father regain his position of High King and rebuild the Kingdom. Ambrosius respects his son and puts his faith in his visions. Merlin is admired as the High King’s son and for his abilities of Sight.
