The Crown (The Selection) Metaphors and Similes

Metaphor of the dam

Eadlyn gave a speech to Illea as its regent when her mother was in a coma and her father devastated. She said that she felt like the speech had created a dam in her throat. The dam is metaphorical of the deep feeling of sadness and sorrow that she was feeling.

America’s character

Eadlyn said that she thought her mother was a rough stone once upon a time. The words ‘rough stone’ are metaphorical for her mother America’s upfront character when she (America) was young.

Metaphor to describe anxiety

Eadlyn said that she was a ball of nerves because of the situation that her family was in due to the illness of their mother and that Ahred had run off to France. The words, ‘ball of nerves’ are metaphorical for they describe the anxiety that she was feeling.

Impact of Ahren’s words

Prince Ahren had written a letter to his sister Eadlyn where he told her that the people of Illea did not like her. Eadlyn said that the words hit her like a punch. The impact of the words is described as a smile,‘they felt like a punch.’ The simile shows how hurtful the words were to Eadlyn.

Manner of wiping eyes

The narrator says, ‘I wiped my eyes with the heel of my hand like a child and wished…’ The simile has likened the manner in which Eadlyn wiped her eyes to how a child wipes eyes therefore creating imagery.
