The Canadian novelist Jen Sookfong Lee born and raised in the Eastside of Vancouver which is a marginalized area. She describes this place in the book The Conjoined, published in 2016. She has published many novels such as The End of East, The Better Mother and Shelter. She is brilliant when she goes against the expectations of fast paced plot and a final twist.
The Conjoined is the most recent novel deals with the murder of two sisters. It does not reveal the mystery of this murder but it brings out the situation in which they are died. It is not only the situation of this poor girls but it portrays the situation of women in that society.
Through the series of flashbacks, the narrator shows the background of those children as well as her own. Lee opens up all these characters and allows the free play in their range so that every character comes out to teach the reader. Moreover, there is no villain, so that all characters are right in their views. But the novel ends abruptly, not solving the mysterious murder of two innocent children. It can be regarded as the twist of this book because when reader is expecting a twist at the end of such mysterious murder case, she uses a technique where she can portray the terrifying situation of those who died and ends abruptly. That's why it is very useful to read such a novel.
