The Color of Magic Metaphors and Similes

The Color of Magic Metaphors and Similes

Sheep and wolf

Twoflower, expectedly, gets kidnapped by an innkeeper and assassin called Ymor in Ankh-Morpork, because he was carelessly showing his possessions. It turns out that there are plenty of those who are after Twoflower, and they all meet in Broken Drum. One of those is Rerpf, a short and fat rich man who comes on behalf of the Guild of Merchants and Traders. Noticing that Rerpf came equipped with strong protection in form of menacing trolls, Ymor thinks to himself that it is a situation where a fox is confronted by an angry sheep, a sheep that could afford to employ wolves.

Echo-gnomics

Discussing magic and magical fields, Rincewing humorously compares gold to magic, saying that gold also has its magical field, a financial wizardry, which he further calls “echo-gnomics”. Rincewind is a pessimistic wizard who believes in the magic of gold and money more than in his capabilities as a wizard.

Tourist means idiot

The dynamics of Rincewind and Twoflower are of two completely opposite individuals. Rincewind is a complete pessimist and Twoflower is an over-the-top optimist and wants to explore as much as he can of Discworld.

Tourist, Rincewind had decided, meant “idiot”.

Tree is like a hive

Rincewind gets separated from Twoflower and finds himself inside a tree captured by dryads. He is apprehensive at the physics of it, as the tree looked fairly thin outside, but there seems to be a vast space inside. He discovers that there are hundreds of dryads inside the tree, but the world thought them extinct.

Insects, thought Rincewind. The Tree is like a hive.
