The City and the City

The City and the City Analysis

The City & the City is a book written by China Miéville and was first published on 15 May 2009 by Macmillan.

The premise of the story is an investigation into the murder of a young woman, Mahalia Geary, who is involved in a government conspiracy. The main protagonist, Inspector Tyador Borlu, is put on the case to identify why the murder happened. However, he discovers more than he expected to, when he realizes that the government of the two cities that make up the setting of the story, were involved in the death of this woman and were intent on hiding something she had discovered; a third, lost city.

The Guardian praised the author by stating “keeping his grip firmly on an idea which would quickly slip from the hands of a less skilled writer, Miéville again proves himself as intelligent as he is original.” It also picked up many awards, winning the BSFA Award for Best Novel of 2009, and the 2010 Arthur C. Clarke Award.
