The Buried Giant Metaphors and Similes

The Buried Giant Metaphors and Similes

Disappearing (Metaphor)

After that rather humiliating and cruel incident with a candle made for Beatrice and Axl by a little girl, so that they would not have to spend their evenings and nights in the darkness, Axl “took her in his arms”. While the pair was embracing, the “crowd melted away”. They didn’t even notice when the crowd left them to be, for they were too distracted and the crowd moved too quickly. This metaphor might also mean that they lost the sight of the crowd because of the thick mist.

Relatives (Metaphor)

Although Axl and Beatrice are eager to visit their son, they can’t help but wonder what his reaction is going to be. There is a chance that they simply chose not the best time to visit him or that he is too busy to pay them enough attention. The thought that helps them to calm down a little bit is that their son is their “flesh and blood”, so he will be definitely glad to see them.

Pour (Metaphor)

The journey to their son’s village is a difficult one. First of all, the pair is old enough and can’t move quickly. The next thing is all dangers and evil forces on their way. The last one is the weather. They noticed that a rain would start any minute, so they had to look for a place to hide from it. They had managed to do it before the sky “truly opened” and the terrible pour started.

Forgotten (Simile)

Axl wanted to have his memories back. One would wonder why he didn’t ask his “fellow villagers” to help him to remember this or that event because this approach could be effective but “in this community the past was rarely discussed”. The past “faded into a mist as dense as that which hung over the marshes”.

Wild (Simile)

To say that the Saxons Axl and Beatrice met in the village were less than friendly would be underestimation. They behaved “like crazed wolves”, ready to tear them apart. Being a respected member of their society, Ivor managed to prevent the injustice.

Beautiful (Simile)

Although Axl and Beatrice has been together for decades, they are still in love. It is not a rare occasion for Axl to say to her that she looks “as fresh as a young maid”. Being an elderly woman, Beatrice doesn’t believe him but is happy to hear it anyway.
