Axl (Axelas or Axelum)
Axl (Axelas or Axelum) is one of the protagonists of the story. As a young man Axl had served King Arthur, but then, after he brokered fragile peace between Saxons and Britons, he was defected from Arthur. Of course, he remembers none of that. Readers meet Axl when he is old. He lives with his wife Beatrice in a Briton village, working for the benefit of his community, although community proves to be ungrateful. Unlike many others, Axl doesn’t not fully submit to the mist. He notices the strange things which happen in the village and remembers them longer than others. Although Axl and Beatrice used to quarrel when they were young and foolish which led to Beatrice’s adultery, Axl proves to be a loving and caring husband. As soon as he recollects his past, he is sorry for his actions.
Beatrice
Beatrice is Axl’s wife. She proves to be a kind and wise woman. When a black cloaked woman appears in the village, it is Beatrice who gives her something to eat and drink. Beatrice’s biggest fear is not to have enough recollections, when she and Axl are ready to go to an island. Her dreams of meeting her son are destroyed as soon as she remembers that he has been dead for many years. Axl didn’t allow her to visit his grave. Maybe it was his punishment for Beatrice’s adultery.
Ivor
Ivor is a Saxon elder. He is a Briton but married to a Saxon woman. He gives Axl and Beatrice a shelter when the pair stops in the Saxon village.
Jonus
Jonus is a monk. It is he, who explains nature of the mist to Axl and Beatrice.
She-dragon Quering
She-dragon Quering is a cunning and fierce dragon. At least, she used to be strong and fierce. Now, she is old and weaker but nobody knows about that. King Arthur asked Merlin to cast a spell on her, so that her breath would poison the air and make people forget their past.
Master Wistan
Master Wistan is a brave Saxon warrior. He is taught to fight by Britons, that’s why he has a soft spot for them. Although he can’t forgive Britons for the awful injustice they done, he likes Axl and Beatrice. Master Wistan is sent by his king to kill Quering and so he does.
Edwin
Edwin is a young boy. He was captured by fiends but Master Wistan saved him. Edwin is made to leave his village, because Saxons believe that he has been bitten by the fiend. Master Wistan is going to make a great warrior out of him, so that he would be able to avenge Britons.
Lord Brennus
Lord Brennus is a Britton Lord. He wants to start a new war with Saxons, but before that, he wants to tame Quering in order to make her fight on his side.
Sir Gawain
Sir Gawain is a nephew of King Arthur and his loyal servant. He puts up with many years of mocking for his inability to slaughter Quering, because he promised Arthur to protect her for peace’s sake. The old knight is killed by Master Wistan. Both of them had to fulfill their duties, so the fight was inevitable. However, the men respect each other.
The boatman
The boatman is a man who takes people to the island. It is possible to say that the boatman is an embodiment of Charon.
