Zoey Albro

Zoey is the story's protagonist, the daughter of Kara. Zoey is a shy and reserved girl but very responsible because she prioritizes the interests of her siblings before hers. Zoey lives with her mother in Lenny's trailer, her mother's boyfriend. Lenny's father, Frank, also lives in the trailer.

Zoey is a bright student but performs poorly in school because she needs more time to concentrate on her studies. For instance, Zoey takes care of her younger stepsiblings, Hector, Bryce and Aurora. Zoey is shy and tries to avoid participating in class discussions and debates. As a result, Zoey's performance academically is bad despite having the potential to perform well.

Lenny

Lenny is Kara's boyfriend and Zoey's stepfather. Lenny is also the son of Frank. The author depicts Lenny as a bully and misogynistic man because he thinks he is always right. Zoey observes that Lenny blames Kara for everything. Kara keeps up with Lenny's humiliation because she has nowhere to go with her daughter.

Frank

Frank is Lenny's father. Frank is a calm and composed man who rarely talks unless engaged in a conversation. Zoey observes that Frank loves watching television and playing games in the sitting room.

Kara

Kara is Zoey's mother and Lenny's girlfriend. Kara is a hardworking woman who is submissive and determined to give her daughter and stepchildren the best. Kara works in a Pizza Pit as a cook. Kara cares for her daughter and three stepchildren to ensure everything in the house runs smoothly. Kara and Zoey live in Lenny's trailer.

Hector

Hector is Lenny's youngest child. Zoey looks after Hector and ensures she is calm to give her humble time to concentrate on her school assignments. However, Hector is troublesome because he often cries and rarely sleeps.

Bryce

Bryce is the brother of Hector and Aura. Bruce is four years old, and the narrator describes him as a rowdy boy. Bryce loves running in the house and making noise most of the time. However, Zoey is used to his troubles.

Aurora

Aurora is three years old and a sibling to Bryce and Hector. Aura is also rowdy and loves singing, making noise and playing. However, unlike Hector and Bryce, Aurora follows instructions whenever Zoey asks her to stay quiet and calm.

Ms. Rochambeau

Ms. Rochambeau is Zoey’s English teacher. Ms. Rochambeau is observant because she discovers that Zoe is a troubled kid. However, she notes that Zoey is intelligent but performs poorly because she rarely concentrates in class. In addition, Ms. Rochambeau notices that Zoey is shy and avoids participating in class discussions and debates. Ms. Rochambeau is determined to help Zoey, and she talks to her and introduces her to bold and courageous students to socialize with her.

Silas

Silas is Zoey's friend who also comes from a poor background. Silas is a calm and silent boy who is not friendly and only talks to someone when conversing. Silas is a friend to Zoey and Fuchsia because they all live in trailers and come from disadvantaged families. The three friends always try to go unnoticed in school because they rarely participate in class discussions.

Fuchsia

Fuchsia is Crystal's daughter and a close friend to Zoey and Silas. Fuchsia lives with her mother. Fuchsia shares similar traits with Zoey and Silas. Fuchsia lives with her mother, and when they fail to pay their rent, they move to live with Michael. Michael is Crystal's boyfriend, who lives in a trailer home.

Matt Hubbard

Matt is a popular boy in school who is courageous, bold and easygoing. Zoey admires Matt's personality and aspires to be like him. Zoey tries to be close to Matt to help her be confident. However, Matt thinks Zoey has a crush on him, which is untrue.

Lydia

Lydia is the most famous girl in school. Lydia is talkative, friendly and influential because of her background. When Ms. Rochambeau realizes Zoey is shy, she asks her to sit beside Lydia and Matt to help her be confident.

Crystal

Crystal is Fuchsia's mother, a hardworking woman who intends to give her daughter the best. However, life becomes hard, and she struggles to pay her house rent. To avoid homelessness, Crystal and her daughter live in Michael's trailer, her boyfriend.

Michael

Michael is Crystal's boyfriend, who accommodates Crystal and her daughter. Michael is an abusive and aggressive man. Michael mistreats Fuchsia and denies her the opportunity to play and carry her toys. When Michael discovers that Fuchsia plans to report to children's services, he threatens her by shooting twice in the air. Michael tells Fuchsia if she dares report him, he will kill her.
