The Beekeeper of Aleppo Themes

Grief

When the war breaks out, beheading becomes the norm. Many people are killed and many more are left traumatized, consumed by endless grief and pain. Those that flee the bloodshed have witnessed their families and friends get murdered before their eyes.

Survival

When a war breaks out in Syria, Nuri and his family are forced to flee for their safety. Afra is traumatized by the violence of the war that she becomes blind. On their journey to seek refuge in a far away land, Nuri is determined to get his family to safety. They will travel through treacherous lands and come across impossible situations, but they will not give up.

Hope

While on their journey, the only thing keeping them together is the hope that their cousin, Mustafa, is waiting for them to arrive in the strange land. Many other refugees are not so lucky. They don't have people overseas that can help them during this transition. Many of them are hopeless, and some hold a bit of hope that someone will help them.

Love

Life in Aleppo before the war was fruitful and filled with love and passion. Nuri's family and friends lived together harmoniously. His love for beekeeping is evident when he's completely heartbroken after his beehives are destroyed. Despite the love that Nuri has for his homeland, he has no choice but to choose his family. The love Nuri and Afra share is strong enough to withstand the journey of a lifetime.
