Nuri Ibrahim
Nuri Ibrahim is the protagonist of the story. Nuri is a beekeeper who lives in Aleppo with his wife and son. He's living a happy and fulfilling life until the civil war breaks out in Syria. Nuri's wife goes blind, and his son gets killed in a bomb blast. After experiencing so many disastrous events, Nuri decides to leave his country with his wife.
Mustafa
Mustafa is the cousin of Nuri, who owns the business of beekeeping. Mustafa is a professor at the Damascus University. He introduces beekeeping to Nuri, and soon they begin to work together. Mustafa sends his wife and daughter to England for their safety. His son's brutal murder leaves him grief-stricken, and he also leaves Syria for good.
Afra
Afra is Nuri's wife, who is a landscape painter. The war turns her life upside-down when she witnesses her child's death. The trauma causes her to lose her eyesight. Afra doesn't want to leave her country, but after losing everything she has, she agrees to go to England with Nuri.
Sami Ibrahim
The Syrian civil war caused many untimely and unjustified deaths, including Nuri and Arfa's only son Sami. Sami's death caused Arfa to go blind due to trauma.
Mohammed
Nuri meets Mohammed in an immigrant camp in Turkey. Mohammed looks like Sami. That's why interaction with him makes Nuri happy. He becomes a friend to Mohammed, and before leaving the camp, he leaves a jar of Nutella and money for him. In the entire story, Mohammed is only visible to Nuri and no one else. It explains that Mohammed is just an imaginary character in the story.
