The narrator is Stephanos in the first person. He is nostalgic for his misses his country Ethiopia and his family. He is also desperate beacuse he is a poor immigrant in America. Stephanos holds the view that proper policy making could improve the lives of citizens.

Tone and Mood

The tone of the novel is nostalgic because the narrator Stepahons and his friends Joseph and Kenneth miss their home countries. The mood of the novel is sombre because the narrator and his friends recount military coups in Africa and the poor state of immigrants in the United States.

Protagonist and Antagonist

The protagonist are Joseph, Stephanos and Kenneth who are nostalgic and weary of the lives of people due to bad governance. The antagonist is the system of bad governance that includes military coups in Africa.

Major Conflict

The major conflict of the novel is the anger that the poor black people of Logan Circle felt towards Judith and all other white people. This is beacuse the poor black people of Logan Circle blamed the white people for their misfortunes such as being poor and being evicted from their homes.

Climax

The climax is reached when Judith's house is burned down and her car is vandalized. She is forced to move away from Logan Circle beacuse she does not feel safe there.

Foreshadowing

While Stephanos and Naomi were reading in his store, he says that after sometime, this moment would be a memory and it would never happen again. This came true after Judith who was Naomi's mother enrolled her in boarding school.

Historical allusion to past historical events such as the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia and how the system of government was changed by a revolution.

Imagery

Stephanos' description of drunk old men. He described them as, '... their foreheads wrinkled, their pants barely buckled around their waists...' The description contains imagery beacuse the narrator has given characteristics of men that can be easily imagined by the readers.

Paradox

Judith said that she torelated her daughter's fierceness and loved her for it. This statement is a paradox beacuse Judith feels two different emotions which are hate and love for her daughter's character.

Parallelism

The narrator Stepahons draws a parallel between Logan Circle which is a poor neighborhood to the other parts of the city of Washington which were lavish since they were the politians lived.

Personification

Stephanos said that depression had struck Logan Circle. He has therefore given the estate feelings that are human based on how shabby the estate looked.
