Chapter 5 - Force and Motion-I - Problems - Page 117: 15b

Answer

108 N

Work Step by Step

The pulley is frictionless and so the magnitude of the force is fully transferred, it only changes direction from being in the y direction to the x direction. The force that is transferred is that of Tension in the rope. Looking at the salami, there are two forces acting on it, the weight of the salami acting down and the tension of the rope upwards. Since the salami is not accelerating, the net force on it (F= ma) is also 0. This means that T-Mg = 0 or otherwise, the Tension = Mg. The spring reads the Tension on the rope, which has a magnitude of Mg = 11kg * 9.8 $m/s^2$ = 108 N
