Chapter 36 - Diffraction - Problems - Page 1108: 4a

Answer

decrease

Work Step by Step

We can look at equation (36-3) to see how wavelength, $\lambda$, affects the spread of diffraction, $\theta$. $\alpha \sin \theta = m \lambda $ where $m=1,2,3,....$ (minima) We can see that smaller wavelengths will give us smaller angles. The diffraction pattern will be less spread and diffraction effects, in general, should decrease.
