Chapter 16 - Exercises and Problems - Page 301: 75

Answer

The answer is below.

Work Step by Step

Using Appendix E to find the distances between planets, we find the proportions of the distances from the sun of mars and venus to earth. Using the equation in the book, we know that we take the fourth root of the proportion to find the percentage that the surface temperature of each planet is of the surface temperature of earth. Doing this, we find that the surface temperature of Mars is 206 Kelvin, and the surface temperature of Venus is 300 Kelvin. As the book stated, the value for Mars is fairly close to the actual value of 218 Kelvin, but the value of Venus is far below the actual value of 735 Kelvin.
