Chapter 15 - Module 47 - Photochemical Smog and Acid Rain - AP Review Questions - Page 532: 4

Answer

D

Work Step by Step

Nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide are released into the atmosphere by natural and anthropogenic combustion processes. Through a series of reactions with atmospheric oxygen and water, these primary pollutants are transformed into secondary pollutants nitric acid and sulfuric acid. These latter compounds breakdown further, producing nitrate and sulfate and hydrogen ions. Eventually, these secondary acidifying pollutants are washed out of the air and deposited either as precipitation or in ray form on vegetation, soil, or water.
