Work Step by Step

1. Count the electrons. a. 1x4 (C) + 1x1 (H) + 1x5 (N) = 10 electrons. b. 1x4 (C) + 2x1 (H) + 1x6 (O) = 12 electrons. c. 2x4 (C) + 4x1 (H) + 3x6 (O) = 30 electrons. 2. Add the bonds between the atoms, and count how many electrons are not used. a. 10 - 2x2 = 6. b. 12 - 3x2 = 6. c. 30 - 8x2 = 14. 3. Add the remaining pairs of electrons to the appropriate atoms, or create double or triple bonds.
