Chapter 54 - Biodiversity and Conservation Biology - Review - Case Study - Page 1161: 15

Answer

The species diversity and species richness, is higher in the second plot. Species richness in the first plot is lower as compared to the second plot where the natural forest is also present.

Work Step by Step

Species richness in the clear-cut plantation is 3 (species C, 1, and 2, where C represents coffee) and species richness in forest plantation is 13 (species A to G and 1 to 6). Forest plantation has more species diversity. The number of species is higher in forest plantation and also the relative abundance of the species is even as compared to the clear-cut plantation. The clear-cut plantation (first plot) is dominated by the single species, which is coffee. However, despite the presence of so many species in the forest plantation, the abundance of species is approximately similar. The plantation retaining some natural forest (second plot) shows abundant species richness, which leads to more diversity in this region.
