Chapter 50 - Behavioral Ecology - Review - Case Study - Page 1069: 15

Answer

The whales changed their direction and speed and rushed toward the beach, which caused beach strandings. This study is not possible as it is related to the environmental issue of death of the whales.

Work Step by Step

To test this hypothesis, an experiment needs to be designed. Two groups of whales will be made, in which one group would be exposed to sonar radiations generated by military operations and the other group would be shielded from the radiations. The change in behaviors between the two groups will be noted down. The first group would lead to beach stranding; therefore, this experiment would not be allowed to take place. This hypothesis can be tested by taking previous observations and checking records of beach strandings and the location of the military base station around that part of the ocean.
