Chapter 50 - Behavioral Ecology - Review - Case Study - Page 1069: 12

Answer

The whale stopped foraging when the sound waves were released into the ocean. They remained close to the ocean surface till the time the sound waves were operated. This experiment proved that the military activities affect the normal behavior of whales.

Work Step by Step

Initiation of sound waves leads the whale stopped foraging, came to the surface of the ocean for breathing and dived again, but remained close to the ocean surface. An experiment was performed to check the effect of sound waves on the behavior of a whale. The results are given in the graph above. The whale was initially found foraging deep into the ocean. It stopped foraging and came to the surface for breathing. It again dived back into the ocean but did not travel deep down. After the exposure of sound waves, it remained close to the surface with low dives.
