Chapter 20 - Test Your Understanding - Level 3 - Synthesis/Evaluation - Page 439: 12

Answer

Evolution could be directed using DNA technologies, either by editing genes already present in organisms to provide better function of the proteins coded for by those genes or by introducing genes from other organisms to provide functions not yet existing in a given organism. In either case, biotechnology would be used to create more and enhanced genetic diversity on which natural selection can act. The directed nature of this action would also speed up evolution which normally depends on the slow appearance of natural mutations.

Work Step by Step

Review earlier material on evolution and see the roles of genetic diversity and natural selection. Use your imagination to see how the various techniques in the chapter (skim through Ch. 20) can enhance this diversity and/or provide superior alleles without the natural process of waiting for spontaneous mutations to arise.
