Chapter 2 - The Chemical Level of Organization - Figure 2.6 - Page 34: 1

Answer

A water molecule has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Each partially positive hydrogen atom is bound to the oxygen atom by a hydrogen bond but is capable of forming a hydrogen bond on its side away from the oxygen atom. The oxygen atom has lone pair electrons away from the hydrogen atoms. Both the lone pair electrons and the hydrogen atoms of the water molecule can become involved in hydrogen binding. Ammonia has one lone pair electron on the nitrogen atom. The nitrogen atom also has three partially positive hydrogen atoms. In an environment in which water and ammonia are in contact hydrogen bonding occurs naturally

Work Step by Step

Water has two pairs of negative lone pair electrons, and two partially positive hydrogen atoms that can become involved in hydrogen bonding. The ammonia molecule has one alone pair electron on one side of its nitrogen atom, and three partially positive hydrogen. Therefore when water and ammonia are mixed hydrogen bonding will normally occur.
