Hemoglobins consists of the protein globin bound to a pigment called heme. The molecules are made up of 4 polypeptide chains and 4 heme groups. They each own an atom of iron in the center. Primarily it is meant to bind to oxygen for each iron atom. When their is oxygen loaded the hemoglobin becomes a bright red when their is no oxygen the blood appears as a dark red.
