Chapter 5 - The Skeletal System - Review Questions - Page 206: 32

Answer

The articulating bones in the synovial joint are separated by a cavity called the joint cavity. This cavity is filled by a lubricating liquid called synovial fluid, secreted by synovial membrane. In a joint with osteoarthritis, the synovial membrane is degraded, causing the synovial fluid to leak out. Due to this, the friction between articulating bones increases and causes pain.
