Chapter 14 - The Digestive System and Body Metabolism - Review Questions - Page 535: 22

Answer

The pharynx is divided into three regions according to the location: -Nasopharynx-upper pharynx -Oropharynx- middle pharynx -Laryngopharynx- lower pharynx

Work Step by Step

The pharynx,(in English-the throat), is a passage that extends from the end of the skull to the level of the sixth cervical vertebra. By receiving air from the nasal cavity and air, food, and water from the oral cavity, it serves both the respiratory and digestive systems. It opens into the larynx and esophagus. The nasopharynx is located in the nasal cavity and extends to the uvula, connects the nasal cavity to the oropharynx, and contains the Eustachian tube openings and adenoids. The oropharynx lies behind the oral cavity. The laryngopharynx extends from the hyoid bone down to the lower margin of the larynx, starts at the epiglottis, and goes down to the top of the esophagus.
