Chapter 11 - The Cardiovascular System - Review Questions - Page 422: 34

Answer

In a fetus, the liver and lungs are almost entirely bypassed by blood because the lungs and digestive systems are not fully developed. The ductus venosus bypasses the liver. The two lung bypasses are the foramen ovale and ductus arteriosus. The umbilical cord consists of three vessels, two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein. The oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the fetus is carried by the umbilical vein. The umbilical arteries carries oxygen-poor blood from the fetus to the placenta.
