Chapter 6 - Section 6.1 - The Law of Sines - Exercise Set - Page 723: 75

Answer

Law of sines cannot be used.

Work Step by Step

The law of Sines states that, the ratio of the length of the side to the sine of the opposite angle is the same for every one of the three sides of the triangle. $\frac{a}{\sin A}=\frac{b}{\sin B}=\frac{c}{\sin C}$ Let us take the values of $a=4,\ b=6$, and $C=60{}^\circ $. Now, substituting the values in $\frac{a}{\sin A}=\frac{b}{\sin B}=\frac{c}{\sin C}$ we get, $\frac{4}{\sin A}=\frac{6}{\sin B}=\frac{c}{\sin 60{}^\circ }$ This equation cannot be solved further. Therefore, the law of sines cannot be used to solve the triangle with the given information.
