Chapter 7 - Algebra: Graphs, Functions, and Linear Systems - 7.1 Graphing and Functions - Exercise Set 7.1 - Page 420: 83

Answer

The rectangular coordinate system is made by intersecting the horizontal line termed as the x-axis and the vertical line termed as the y-axis.

Work Step by Step

Consider the two lines the horizontal line and the vertical line that are termed as x-axis and y-axis, respectively. These two lines intersect each other at a point known as origin. This point is marked as zero. All counting starts from this point only. The positive numbers are shown on the right side and top side of the axis. The negative numbers are shown on the left side and bottom side of the axis. These axes divide the plane into four quadrants. This system is known as a rectangular coordinate system. This is used for plotting the graphs. Hence, the rectangular coordinate system is made by intersecting the horizontal line termed as the x-axis and the vertical line termed as the y-axis.
