“There will be fog tonight.”
The worshipers of the Temple of Hate will be hosting their normal underground prayers. Fafhrd is worried that the masked priests of the Temple of Hate will sermon a serpent-like fog and emit it into the city streets to kill and takes people’s minds. Consequently, Fafhrd is warning Mouser and the people around him to be aware of the looming danger and take necessary precautions to tackle the hovering evil that intends to destroy people.
"Now that's a strange thing. We have won; I know not how many jewels and oddments of gold and electrum in our adventuring and even letters of credit on the Guild of the Grain Merchants. Where have they all flown to? The credit letters on parchment wings, jewels jetting fire like a tiny red green and pearly cuttlefish. Why aren’t we rich?”
Fafhrd and Mouser are business partners in gold, electrum, and other precious commodities. However, the economic situation in the city is worsening. Fafhrd wonders why they are still poor despite making reasonable sales. However, Mouser is keen to realize that there is inflation, and the economy is not doing well. Consequently, despite adventuring in the business, the income is affected by the high operational costs that make them poor. According to Mouser, it is time they think of suspending their partnership and focusing on doing something else; otherwise, they will be trapped in poverty.
“And even when we serve, we make the rules. We bow to no man’s ultimate command, dance to no wizard’s drumming, join no mob, hack to no wildering hate-call. When we draw sword, it is for ourselves alone. What’s that?”
The quote brings out the true traits of Fafhrd and Mouser. As depicted in the quote, the two friends are courageous, principled, and honest in whatever they do. For instance, when the killer fog comes to them, they stand boldly and face it diligently. Using their inner powers, they defeat it. According to Fafhrd, they do not bow to anybody because they are principled, and this is important because it shows where they gain their courage.
