Fafhrd
Fafhrd is the primary protagonist in the book, and he works closely with The Gray Mouser in whatever he does. Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are leaving Lankhmar and headed to Ilthmar. Fafhrd is determined to leave his town, and he vows that he will never come back again. While in Lankhmar. The black magic killed Fafhrd's wife.
While in Ilthmar, Fafhrd and his friend work as entertainers and bodyguards. After three years, Fafhrd is notified that Ice Gnomes have killed his Snow Clan. Life starts boring in Ilthimar, and Fafhrd decides to return to Lankhmar after being convinced by Ninguable. In the Thieves' Guild, Fafhrd and Mouser are assigned by the Master to kill the monster and steal the hidden treasure in the Votishah temple.
The Gray Mouse
The Gray Mouser is the secondary protagonist and spends most of his time with Fafhrd. Mouser also has the same predicament as Fafhrd because his wife, Ivrian, was killed in Lankhmar by the black magic, and he is leaving the town with his friend to try a new life at Ilthmar. Upon arriving in the new town, he works alongside his friend as a bodyguard and entertainer for about three years. The Gray Mouser is an interesting character from the previous stories in this series, and he continues to practice his black magic.
When the Master of Thieves' Guild sends Fafhrd and Mouser to break into the Votishal temple and steal the treasure, Mouser's primary responsibility is to carry the unpackable lock, which he should surrender to the Master. Before launching the Votishal temple, the Gray Mouser and Fafhrd stay with a peasant family where he entertains them with stories as they wait for the appropriate time to strike their target.
The Master of Thieves’ Guild
The Master of Thieves' Guild is the head of the warehouse where the priest thieves stole the treasure long ago. The Master of Thieves' Guild realizes that business has not been doing well for the last four months. When he discovers a document in the warehouse, he realizes that Ohmphal's head and skull are missing, and they are hidden in the Votishal temple. Consequently, the Master of Thieves' Guild recruits the Gray Mouser and Fafhrd to repossess the treasure back.
Sheelba of the Eyeless Face
Sheelba is a magic user, perfecting in swimming in his hat across the town. Besides doing the unthinkable, he also foresees the future. When he meets Fafhrd and the Gray Mouse leaving Lankhmar for good, he tries to prevent them but also tells them even if they insist on going; they will have to return to Lankhmar in the future because there is no better place than Lankhmar.
Ice Gnomes
Ice Gnomes are the black magic that massacres the entire Snow Clan where Fafhrd originally belongs. Fafhrd learns about the killings while in Ilthmar and decides to go back to assess the situation. Ice Gnomes is depicted as relentless spirit that can wake up one day and wipe out the entire clan.
Vlana
Vlana is a southern girl danger who met with Fafhrd in the Cold Corner, and they fell in love. Later, Fafhrd married Vlana, and he loved her because she was civilized, unlike the Snow Women, who were backward and controlling. Unfortunately, Vlana is killed by the black magic in Lankhmar, which forces Fafhrd to leave the town and start a new life in Ilthmar.
Ivrian
Ivrian is the wife of the Gray Mouser, and they first met when her father detained him. Mouser was on a revenge mission against her father, and she helped him accomplish his goal of destroying Duke. Ivrian was also learning to be a wizard before she met Mouser. After marrying Mouser, Ivrian is killed by the black magic forcing Mouser to flee Lankhmar to Ilthmar.
