“Still I Rise” was originally published in Maya Angelou's third poetry volume, And Still I Rise, and remains one of Angelou’s most celebrated poems to this day. Angelou wrote this collection, as well as a 1976 play of the same name, during a particularly prolific period in her storied career. By the time "Still I Rise" was published, Angelou had already achieved recognition for three autobiographies in addition to her previous two volumes of verse. Angelou frequently cited this poem as a personal favorite, noting in an interview that she turned to it in difficult times and often recited it at public readings.
