The System
As the journalists from Spotlight start to uncover the details about the cases of pedophilia and abuse of children in the Church, they realize the gravity and the size of the situation. It soon starts to become a combined effort to not only bring down a few individuals, but the entire system of abuse and cover-ups of the truth. It is the system that worked in favor of the abusers, and denied the victims of their much-needed and deserved justice.
Spotlight
"Spotlight" is the name of the journalist group that uncovers the truth about the abuse system of the Church. It is a symbolic name that represents the message of the movie of bringing the hidden truth to the spotlight.
The Church
The Church, as represented in the movie, is not only a religious force, but also a force that has impact and control pretty much everywhere. The movie uncovers that majority of the people knew of the system of abuse that was happening, and everyone was either forced or persuaded to keep quiet. Significant is the scene where Robby has a conversation with one of his politician friends, who tries to persuade him to give up on uncovering the truth, using the positive aspects of the Church to negate the abuse.
Giving voice to the victims
The movie ends with a striking scene, after the newspaper with the uncovering of the abuse was published, with Robby and Mike rushing to the office and being told that it's mostly victims who are calling. This ending scene quite literally represents the idea of giving the voice to the victims.
