Spider-Man (2002 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Spider-Man

Peter gets a suit to wear and finally becomes the iconic Spider-Man. His suit is a symbol hope and justice as no one knows Spider-Man's identity, which means that he represents the whole of the community to do what is right for them, to give them a reason to hope for good.

Uncle Ben

Uncle Ben is murdered and Peter hunts down and kills the man who did it. This is a symbol of Peter using his powers to take justice into his own hands and acting out of vengeance, rather than using his gifts for justice within the society that he lives in.

Followed

Peter's web-slinger goes off in the lunch room and attaches itself to a lunch tray which he cannot get rid of. This is a symbol that no matter where Peter goes so do his powers. He cannot hide his abilities just yet as he doesn't have complete control over them now.

Crashing

Peter crashed into a brick wall while trying out his web-slinger for the first time. This is a symbol that although he's developed great powers overnight, he is still fallible and not invincible, i.e. he's still human.

Haze

Spider-Man wakes up from a haze that the Green Goblin put him under with an atomized drug that caused him to pass out. We see Spider-Man surrounded by a smoke when he comes to and it is a symbol of the Green Goblin's menace - that his mind has been overtaken by another force which now is used against Spider-Man.
