Spellbound Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Dreams

Dreams are a symbol of communication. Bryna uses dreams to connect with Calin. She is not allowed to contact him directly so she uses dreams to tell him a story and make herself known to him. As he grows older, Calin feels these dreams as an intrusion and blocks them. This severs the communication between him and Bryna. This communication is essential for their connection to form and bond over the years.

Solstice

The Solstice is a symbol of renewal, since the Solstice brings the end of Bryna the Wise’s spell and a new beginning for Calin and Bryna. After the battle with Alasdair, they are able to begin their life together. Calin declares his love for Bryna and wants her to be his wife. Bryna’s life up to this point has been her waiting for everything to happen. Waiting for Calin and waiting for the battle with Alasdair. The Solstice brings her a new life with Calin and the danger of Alasdair gone. It is a start of a new life for her.

The Circle

The Circle is a symbol of strength. Bryna must be in the circle to conjure her magic. If she leaves the circle she is vulnerable to attack from Alasdair. When she steps outside of the circle to help Calin, she risks her life for she cannot protect herself. She draws her strength from the circle and the elements within it.

The Globe

The Globe that Bryna’s family has protected for generations is a symbol of the world. In its depths you can see everything has is happening in the world. In the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. Bryna protects it and will give up her life to keep it from Alasdair. Alasdair desperately wishes to possess Bryna and the Globe.

White Stag

The White Stag is a symbol of freedom. Calin has the freedom to leave without helping Bryna. His life will not be affected, if he chooses to leave Bryna on her own to face Alasdair. He has of choice of whether to help her. Bryna repeatedly tells him that it is his choice of what to do. She cannot force him to love her to break the spell and keep Alasdair of making her his prisoner for the next thousand years.
