How do Charlemagne and the rest of the Franks find out that Ganelon has betrayed them?
It is never explicitly made clear in The Song of Roland how Charlemagne and the other Franks deduce Ganelon's deception. It is true that it was Ganelon who claimed that the Saracens had made peace with the Franks; and it is likewise true that it was Ganelon who nominated Roland to Charlemagne's rearguard. Additionally, the Saracens would probably not have known of the composition of Charlemagne's forces, or of the route they would take back to France, without Ganelon's aid. All of these factors reveal Ganelon as a traitor to his former compatriots.
