In this era, footbinding was still a common practice - women would have their feet tied up because it was appealing to men.
Lisa See is an American writer with American and Chinese ancestry. Many of her works, both fictional and non-fictional, deal with Chinese culture and tradition, like this one. Although she was born in Paris, See spent most of her childhood days in Los Angeles. Her first book, a memoir published in 1995, was titled On Gold Mountain. It was very successful, and gave a detailed description of her life living in a Chinese-American family as a child.
