Introduction to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a late 14th-century chivalric romance, originally written in Middle English. Its stanzas are written in alliterative verse, which each end with a bob-and-wheel rhyming scheme. The author is unknown and the title was added centuries later. Amongst the manuscript for Sir Gawain were also found three other poems, Pearl, Purity, and Patience, which most scholars believe were written by the same poet. Sir Gawain is a prime example of the Arthurian chivalric romance, which often follow a brave knight who must prove themselves, both physically and morally, through some kind of challenge.
