This novel is a difficult but extremely rewarding and relevant work to explore with students. The lesson plan has been designed to balance between literary discussions of the text and historical discussions about mass incarceration, poverty, and police brutality, but the two are inevitably intertwined. These topics are vitally important for students to engage with, but may be disturbing. In particular, the use of racial slurs should be addressed intentionally by the instructor and students alike, hence the first Day 1 activity.
