    What role do animals play in the novel so far?

    Animals are a central part of the novel thus far. Chapter 1 opens with Jojo watching his grandfather slaughtering a goat. While it is clearly a necessary and regular part of their life, this event also allows Jojo to reflect upon death more broadly: "I like to think that it's something I could look at straight," he says. Besides their physical presence, animals also provide a metaphorical framework within which the characters interpret their surroundings and experiences. When Jojo recalls a fight between his parents, he says, "they were one, scuttling, clumsy like a hermit crab over sand."
