Second Class Citizen is Buchi Emecheta's second published book. Many of her books contain similar themes dealing with colonialism in Nigeria as well as the race, class, and gender struggles she faced, particularly as a Black immigrant in England in the mid-to-late-20th century. These novels include In the Ditch, The Bride Price, The Slave Girl, and The Joys of Motherhood.
Emecheta also wrote an autobiography, Head Above Water, published in 1984. This work contextualizes her fiction, showing the extent to which it is a reflection of her own experiences. It also provides educational history through the lens of a female African immigrant.
