Sea of Poppies Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Dowry

Deeti’s father pays dowry during her nuptials as a reimbursement: “The new thatch had been paid for by her own father, as a part of her dowry – although he could ill afford it, he had not begrudged the expense since Deeti was the last of his children to be married off.” The thatch is emblematic of the commodification of Deeti’s matrimonial because it is paid to recompense Singh for accepting to marry her. Deeti’s value is blatantly made to correspond to the thatch.

Stars

Gosh confirms “Her (Deeti's) prospects had always been bedevilled by her stars, her fate being ruled by Saturn – Shani – a planet that exercised great power on those born under its influence, often bringing discord, unhappiness and disharmony. With this shadow darkening her future, Deeti's expectations had never been high:” An elucidation of Deeti’s stars equips her psychologically about the gloom which awaits her. Deeti validates the exactness of the stars after she is married to a despondent addict who brings disharmony in her life.

Ox-Cart

For Kalua, an ox-cart is a categorical livelihood. When the thakurs ask him what he would aspire to own he responds: Malik, I would be glad to have a bayl-gari like that one. I could make a living from it.” Kalua’s rejoinder affirms that he aspires to be economically liberated. The ox-cart may seem trivial for the Thakurs considering their enormous wealth, but for Kalua, it would be a considerable foundation of his sustenance.

Sneezing

Sneezing is prevalent at the ‘Sudder Opium Factory’: “As Kalua's cart rolled on, towards the factory's main compound, Deeti and Kabutri began to sneeze; soon, Kalua and the oxen were sniffling too.” The sneezing depicts the allergic repercussions of opium. Being at the factory is an blatant exposure to the uncontrollable allergies that are ascribed to opium. The oxen’s sneezing is a corroboration of the pervasiveness of the opium scent at the factory.
