"We weren't in love, but both of us were unhappy."
This is Marianne's statement to the reporter who has come to their home for an interview about how she and Johan got married. The statement reveals their lack of depth in their relationship from the beginning, and their fear of being along which brought them together.
"Security, order, contentment, loyalty."
These words are Johan's description of the marriage when he is asked if they have had hitches in their marriage. He says that their marriage has had everything one needs, but he fails to mention love.
"I heard someone say just last night that the very lack of problems could cause strife. We're well aware of the hazards of a life like ours."
Marianne says this in regards to their marriage having no problems from the outside. Nonetheless, the question that is being begged to be answered is what does your marriage look like from the inside? Does she or Johan truly know?
